Race Construction
Marphona is ring raced to enable feeding at the same
time as milking. This enables the tractors to operate
from the outsides of the perimeter and travel up the
races without interferring with stock returning to the
paddocks from milking. The intention is to have all
paddocks within 1500m of the dairy parlour.

Calf Shed
The calf shed has capacity to hold 400 calves, each
spending 2 weeks in the shed then progess to 56 separate
calf paddocks. Approx 500 dairy heifer replacements
bred per year. For quality control the calves are weighed
from birth until 2 years.
Environmental Management
Marphona Farms is a major landowner in the Motukaraka
Drainage Scheme, and is an active member of the associated
Care Group.
Water Supply
150mm diameter ring mains supply water through
50mm diameter feeders to 2500 capacity troughs, with
1 trough every 1.6 ha (4 acres). Irrigation is available
for approx 50 ha (124 acres). Three Bores are located
on Marphona Farms
Bore 1, 100 dia capacity 32,000 l/hr
Bore 2, 150 dia capacity 46.600 l/hr
Bore 3, 150 dia capacity 64,000 l/hr
Effluent
Effluent discharge is managed with an underground spray
irrigation system with hydrants in each paddock. A Pirot
Effluent Irrigator is run from these hydrants, with
a backup system of spray tankers. In total 94 hectares
are irrigated with effluent, all of which is controlled
under a full Resource Consent from Environment Waikato.
